The first historical acoount of this disorder was in 1836, by Guillame Duchenne, who gave a comprehensive account of 13 patients with the disorder, which he called "paralysie musculaire psuedo-hypertrophique". He described the patients with the disorder as having an awkward manner of walking, frequent falls, fatigue,difficulty with motor skills, progressive difficulty in walking, muscle fiber deformities, enlarging of tongue and calf muscles, and skeletal deformities.
